I have just returned from Corfu and Paxos .

I wasn’t sure what to expect before I left England. The TV and Press were so full of what was going on in Athens that I wondered whether the islands would be different in any way.

I can honestly say that everything was exactly the same .It was almost as though Athens was in a different country. The subject and the problems were hardly ever raised as a topic of conversation and nobody seemed to be unduly worried.

I suppose the reason is that the islands derive their income from tourism and as long as that isn’t affected their livelihood will continue as before. People on the islands who worked for the Government seemed to be in the minority .

I did meet one woman whose husband did actually work for the Government and he was near retirement age. She told me that she was worried that he wouldn’t be able to retire as planned – but that was it.

The sun was still shining, the sea was warming up, and the friendliness and hospitality of the Greek people was still the same. For me there was no change.
