While many visitors come to Alonissos to enjoy the island’s gentle pace of life, for a week in September the islanders showcase their impressive range of talents in a week of cultural activities. The many varied events attract both locals and visitors to celebrate the end of the summer period.

The 2012 cultural week has just finished and here are a few of the highlights of this year’s event.

Photographic Exhibition – this was a selection of pictures of Alonissos and from around the world. Anyone was free to exhibit their photos at the event although islanders were particularly encouraged to do so.

Traditional Dancing – a celebration of dance performed by a troop of west Macedonian dancers from Kozoni. Saffron tea and saffron biscuits were shared out to signify the saffron cactus which is grown in the Kozoni region and its spice exported around the world.

Alonissos Boys rock band – a full stadium rocked to the sounds of this talented local band. While the lead singer George once played in a band in Canada, the band is most definitely local (the drummer is a plumber and the bass player works in the town hall). During their two hour performance they played many Greek rock classics, as well as international anthems Smoke on the Water and Cocaine.

Children’s Puppet Show – attended by around 100 children, this was a celebration of Greek puppet shows . The dragon puppets kept the children entertained with a show that included traditional songs.

This was followed by an acoustic performance by George (the lead singer of the rock band) in the cafe bar.

Alonissos Marathon – Sunday was the day when things got energetic, with a gruelling all-terrain marathon for the super-fit and a 10km run and 21 km walk for the merely human participants. A honourable mention should go to Sunvil guest Mr Dent who was the first Brit home in the 10k run, completing the course in only 47 minutes. Here he is at the end of the race looking remarkably energetic:

Mr Dent - finishing 8th overall in the 10k run

Taking a more leisurely approach were Sunvil’s own Julia and Dinah who took their dogs with them on the 10k walk – here they are on the finish line.
